Q is for Quarries Quarries By Cory
Quarries are a kind of mine that has stone and rock inside of it. There are many quarries in Solano County. Three of them include the Ramsey Quarry in Rockville Park, the Thomasson Quarry on Nelsons Hill near Cordelia and a limestone quarry in Cement City which is now Cement Hill in Fairfield. In 1855, marble was discovered on a hill about 5 miles north of Suisun City. After the marble was discovered, the Suisun Marble & Quarry Co. was formed. The stone that was quarried was shipped by schooner from Suisun City to San Francisco and other points. During the gold rush, many Chinese people came to California to search for gold. Most who came were disappointed but some were attracted to Solano County's rich farmland. During the middle 19th century when the Gold Rush happened, many of the employees in quarries around this area were Chinese. Today the Ramsey Quarry still stands in Rockville Park for people to see. How do you get there? Well if you know where Rockville is then you take Rockville Road right through town and drive until you get to the main entrance of Rockville Park. Then you take the trail to the right until you get to the quarry. There are some buildings made from the rock that is dug out of quarries. There is a church out in Green Valley that is made out of marble. There are many buildings that are made of marble and the surrounding areas. Quarrying is not a very common kind of mining. The tools that might have been used were a pickax and a shovel. Usually if someone goes mining they mean they are mining for gold. This is why quarrying isn't a very common method of mining. If you were to see a big pit and you didn't know if it was a quarry or just a big pit. Well, quarries have rock inside of them that is ready to be dug out of the big pit called a quarry. Dimension stone is dug out of quarries. There are many kinds of dimension stone. These kinds are flagstone, granite, limestone, marble, sandstone and slate. All these kinds of rock are quarried in huge amounts each year. I hope you learned a lot about quarries from me. I have included a way groovy background along with a pictures of some quarries from Rockville Park in Rockville CA. The moving picture is the Ramsey Quarry I mentioned about earlier in my report. There are also many quarries that dot Solano County. Thank you for listening to my report on quarries.
